Bernese Hound

History, origin & features

The Bernese Hound's origins go back a long way, and it is thought to be descended from the hunting dogs of the Nile Valley, brought to Europe by the Phoenicians. In 1882, 5 varieties were first established, then revised in 1882 and in 1933, when 4 varieties were confirmed: the Bernese, the Bruno du Jura, the Lucerne and the Schwyz. Lucerne Hounds are excellent hunters, especially of hares. With their keen sense of smell, they are docile and loyal. Very attached to its master, its gentle temperament can also work well with children, but it's not meant to be just a pet; it loves its role as a hunter. Of medium size, this breed of dog has a lanky appearance. Their coat is short, smooth and dense. As for coat color, the Lucerne Hound sports a blue, mottled coat with black spots or saddle. Fawn markings are generally visible on certain parts of the body.
