Bulldog

History, origin & features

The Bulldog's history is punctuated by violence. In fact, this breed of British origin, derived from Mastiffs, was originally used to fight other animals, in particular bulls, from which it takes its name. It's a mastiff-type molossoid, saved from extinction by Mr. Bill George. First appearing in the 17th century, its morphology has continued to evolve over the centuries, with dogs selected for their stocky physique and very short muzzle. The French Bulldog is a direct descendant. Very affectionate, the English Bulldog is a courageous and determined dog. Despite its physique, it is a placid, gentle animal that is perfectly suited to family life. Calm, they are also good watchdogs. Its cousin, the French Bulldog, is livelier, but just as affectionate and companionable. Both breeds are small and robust, but not built for endurance. The coat is fine and smooth, and can be solid or two-tone.
