Broholmer

History, origin & features

The Broholmer, already known in the Middle Ages, was used to hunt deer.
This breed became the castle's guard dog, which is probably why the Earl of Broholm took an interest in it and created a breed of its own, hence its name today. The Broholmer is prized for its watchdog qualities, and is hardly ever used as a hunting dog. Well-balanced, friendly but vigilant, this is a very reliable, self-confident breed.
It's a calm-tempered dog that will never attack without reason.
Like all dogs originally bred for hunting, it's essential to provide them with a living environment that allows them to exercise, track and stimulate their equilibrium. The Broholmer is a large, powerfully built dog with a powerful stance. Its imposing physique reflects its main function. The coat is short, with a thick undercoat. The coat color is generally fawn with a black mask; golden red or black.
