German Shorthaired Pointer

History, origin & features

Prized early on by European courts for their pointing qualities, German Pointers have become versatile dogs as hunting techniques have evolved. Sharing the common stock of all pointing dogs, that of the Oysel dog, the breed is divided into two subfamilies: Deutsch Kurzhaar and Deutsch Drahthaar. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a mild-mannered dog without an ounce of aggression, affectionate and well-balanced. Intelligent and self-confident, they can also be stubborn. A good knowledge of the breed is essential to get to grips with it and maximize cohabitation. They are excellent hunting dogs and equally good pets, respectful of children and good housekeepers. Be careful, however, with other animals in the household. The German Wirehaired Pointer has a strong predatory instinct. Athletic, the German Shorthaired Pointer's physique is all harmony. It exudes power, endurance and speed, and rightly so: it's an animal that needs to exercise every day. The short, close coat can be bicolor or unicolor, most often brown, white or roan.
