History, origin & features
Descended from Tibetan Mastiffs by some, and a very old local breed by others, the Bernese Mountain Dog originated in the pre-Alps and countryside of the canton of Bern, Dürrbäch and Burgdorf.
They were originally used as guard, draft and herding dogs. Bernese Mountain Dogs are distinguished by their great versatility. His kindness and hard-working nature have made him both a utility dog (guide dog, herding dog, guard dog) and a perfect playmate for children. He'll deter strangers without being a barker! Sociable and docile, they readily accept living with other dogs. On the other hand, they generally dread solitude, and don't take well to separation. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, well-balanced dog, powerful and supple. They have a medium-long muzzle and floppy ears. Impressive at first glance, this breed is characterized by a medium-length coat and a beautiful tricolor: black and tan with white patches on chest, head and feet.
