Havanese

History, origin & features

The Havanese certainly originated in the Mediterranean region, and is a descendant of the Bolognese or Maltese Bichons. Imported to Cuba by the conquistadors, the primary breed evolved through further cross-breeding into the Havanese. Political events in Cuba led to the breed's total disappearance from its homeland. Today, there are no Havanese left on the island, although a few specimens have been smuggled into the USA. The Havanese has a similar character to its fellow Bichons: docile, cheerful and affectionate, it makes an ideal companion for the whole family, especially children, with whom it is indefatigable. But he's particularly appreciated for his alertness, which makes him a very effective alarm dog. The Bichon havanais is a rather long, low-legged little dog. Their coat is long, silky, slightly wavy and very dense. Their coat is rarely white, but beige, sandy, tan or gray.
