History, origin & features
Over 2,000 years old, the Yugoslav Shepherd Dog of Chaplanina is probably descended from the Epirus molossus, and has always been used as a herding dog in the southern mountains of the former Yugoslavia (Charplanina region). Although the Yugoslavian Shepherd is not a dog for everyone (very imposing size, strong character), it is a dog with a calm, reliable and courageous temperament.
Intelligent and highly reactive, they can become good defense dogs with specific training. But first and foremost, they are talented shepherds who will intuitively protect their flock and their much-loved master. Like most mountain dogs, they are very hardy and suffer from no particular disease. They also need open spaces and physical exercise on a daily basis, even if they are calm by nature.
