History, origin & features

The Portuguese Shepherd is a breed that was used to herd and guard flocks in Portugal's Alentejo region, known for its very changeable climate. Today, the Portuguese Shepherd has also become a companion animal. They are still very common in Portugal, but very few are found outside the country. Nicknamed the “Macaque Dog” because of its playfulness and expressive head, the Portuguese Shepherd, in addition to its qualities as a hard-working, lively and attentive sheepdog, has won over the hearts of families to become a true companion dog. He is very devoted to his master and can adapt to all kinds of tasks. Portuguese Shepherds are medium-sized, rather hardy dogs. It is supple and agile in appearance, with a very specific head. The coat forms large eyebrows and a beard. The rest of the coat is long, a little curly and similar to goat's hair. The color of the coat can vary from yellow, brown, gray, fawn, wolf-gray and black.
