Podhale Polish Shepherd Dog

History, origin & features

The Polish Podhale Shepherd (otherwise known as the Tatra Shepherd) is a very old breed. Traces have been found dating back to the 14th century, after various crosses between the Tibetan Shepherd and the Hungarian Kuvasz Shepherd. They arrived in Poland, in the Tatra mountains, in the company of Phoenician traders from Europe, who exchanged them for noble products.
They were also used as war dogs by the Romans, as well as companion dogs. Shepherd Dogs are characterized by their calm, gentle temperament and intelligence. Attentive and vigilant, they make excellent herding dogs. Their protective instincts and affection for their masters make them excellent companions for children, and efficient watchdogs, especially when it comes to defending their family.
