History, origin & features
Of Italian origin, the Maremma Sheepdog is an ancient breed of herding dog. It's a cross between the shepherd dogs used in Abruzzo, and the sheepdogs that once existed in the Maremma region (Tuscany). This breed has always been used as a herding dog, so it has developed all the characteristics specific to its work: courageous, hard-working and independent. The Maremma Sheepdog is devoted to its master, but also shows initiative. Maremma Sheepdogs are large, powerful and muscular. Their coat is long, dense and rough. Their coat color is almost exclusively white. The Maremma and Abruzzo Sheepdog is a typical mountain dog, with the appearance of a polar bear.
