History, origin & features

Little is known about the origins and history of the Catalan Shepherd Dog: Originating in the Catalan Pyrenees, the Catalan Shepherd spread throughout the pastoral areas of Catalonia, and until recently remained the breed's only locality. Probably the result of various crosses between local shepherd breeds, the Catalan Shepherd is mainly used to guard and guide flocks. Catalan Shepherd Dogs are highly versatile: first and foremost, they are shepherd dogs par excellence: docile, intelligent and courageous, they will even take the initiative when the time comes to maintain their flock. But he's also very much appreciated as a guard dog, and is increasingly known as a companion dog: thanks to his affectionate, playful side, he's sure to become a child's ideal friend. The Catalan Shepherd is a medium-small, harmonious dog. Its long, smooth or wavy coat gives it a plush appearance. As for the color of their coat, seen from a distance it looks plain, but in reality it's a mixture of several shades: fawn, more or less reddish brown, gray, white and/or black.
