Tosa

History, origin & features

This “Japanese mastiff” is a crossbreed of the Shikoku-Ken and Western breeds such as the Bulldog, Great Dane, Mastiff, Great Dane and Saint Bernard. Very attached to the tradition of dog-fighting, the Japanese wanted to create a breed of fighting dog that would stand the test of time. The Tosa is unjustly described as cruel and bloodthirsty. Yet it's a calm, serene and thoughtful breed, which doesn't attack without reason and always maintains a certain reserve. They are large, imposing and robust, yet very elegant. Their short, hard, dense coat is solid red, fawn, apricot, black or brindle.
