basset Hound

History, origin & features

The Basset Hound is thought to be the result of crossbreeding between different French Bassets (Normandy, Artois, Ardennes). It was mainly used for hunting.
It was imported to England at the end of the 19th century, then to the United States in the middle of the following century, where the breed was developed. That said, the breed's paternity remains British. The Basset Hound is not known for being a vicious dog, quite the contrary. It's a very affectionate breed, never aggressive, with a pack spirit, and will be an ideal companion for children as well as other family pets, as long as they've been properly introduced. The Basset Hound is a small, short-legged dog that should give an impression of vitality rather than heaviness, an aspect that can be accentuated by its tender gaze, long ears and hanging whisker pads. Their coat is short, generally tricolored (black, white, fawn) or bicolored (black and white).
