Shiba Inu

History, origin & features

The Shiba Inu is a very old breed, used for hunting game and birds. Threatened with extinction due to repeated cross-breeding with dogs imported to the island, the characteristics of the pure breed were established in 1934, and Japan declared the animal a “natural monument” in 1937. These small, sturdy, muscular dogs are distinguished by their lively gait. Their coat is short, with a soft, thick undercoat that forms a beautiful coat. Colors range from red, black and tan, to sesame, black sesame and red sesame.
