puggle

History, origin & features

In the 1980s, American breeder Wallace Havens deliberately crossed a Beagle female with a Carlin male to create the Puggle. Although similar hybridizations had occurred accidentally in the past, Havens is recognized as the creator of the breed. His aim was to combine the qualities of the Beagle and the Pug while avoiding their faults, notably the Pug's health problems. The term “Puggle” is a contraction of “Beagle” and “Pug”.

In the early 2000s, first-generation puppies were made available for adoption, and since then the Puggle's popularity has grown steadily, making it a highly sought-after hybrid breed.

To date, Puggle puppies are born from one Beagle and one Pug parent. The breed will remain unregistered until Puggles are successfully bred to Puggles over several generations.
