English Pointer

History, origin & features

The English Pointer is one of the most popular pointing dog breeds. Although recognized as British, the origins of the breed are uncertain; the Pointer is thought to have Latin ancestors; Spanish, Italian or Portuguese.
However, it was British breeders who, through judicious mating and cross-breeding, fashioned the light, elegant dog that is the modern Pointer, which appeared in Great Britain at the beginning of the 16th century. Pointers are known for their good temperament, calmness and stoicism. Intelligent, they are also highly obedient, sociable and easy to train. All these qualities make the English Pointer an excellent companion and hunting dog.
In fact, the English Pointer is mainly used for hunting game birds: it's an excellent athlete who needs to exercise regularly to stay fit and balanced.
Beware, however, of its predatory instinct, which is more prevalent than in other shepherd-type dogs. Sporty and very active, English Pointers have elegant, elongated lines, forged for speed, endurance and suppleness. Their coat is fine and short, and can be white, orange, brown or black. They can be unicolor, bicolor or tricolor.
