History, origin & features
Originally from Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was only recently introduced to Europe; it was the British who brought the first specimens back to London in 1920 on their way back from India.
Guardians of Buddhist temples and protectors of monks, the Lhasa Apso is highly respected in Tibet, where it is considered sacred, which explains why it was rarely offered to foreigners, and why its introduction to the West was complicated. It is not for nothing that the Lhasa Apso has been entrusted with the mission of guardian. It has a strong, well-tempered character.
They need to be brought up with care from a very young age, so that their strong character does not get the better of them. Happy, independent and self-confident, they are affectionate but wary of strangers. These robust little dogs can withstand harsh climates, thanks in no small part to their long, abundant coat. Their coat can be black, white, grey or honey in a variety of shades.
