Spanish Greyhound (or Galgo)

History, origin & features

The Spanish Greyhound (or Galgo) was massively imported into Ireland and England from the 16th century, first for hunting and then for racing. Not surprisingly, the Galgo gave rise to the English Greyhound. The Spanish Greyhound has a shy, reserved character, although it is affectionate and very attached to its master. This dog nevertheless has a great deal of energy, which it needs to expend on a daily basis. Like all sighthound breeds, the Spanish Galgo has an elegant, lanky physique with a narrow head, a highly developed ribcage and long legs, making it an outstanding sprinter. Their coat is short and smooth and accepts a wide range of colours, although it is very often fawn, black or cinnamon.
