Jack Russel Terrier

History, origin & features

The Jack Russell is a small terrier. The Russell Terrier breed was developed in the 19th century by the English Reverend John Russell from the Fox Terrier breed, with the aim of producing a small, agile dog that could be used for hunting and to dislodge animals from their dens.

Two varieties of Russell Terrier exist today: the Jack, small, short-legged and long-bodied, and the Parson, squarer and larger than its cousin. The Jack Russell Terrier is excessively lively, intelligent, curious, active and alert. Affectionate and endowed with a strong personality, they are excellent indoor companions, playful and in need of exercise to relieve boredom. Initially used for hunting, they are bold and very obedient, although they can be considered stubborn on some points. Jack Russell Terriers can have a rough, smooth or wiry coat. In all cases, white must be the main color, and may be complemented by black, brown or fawn patches of any shade. It has a long, slender muzzle and floppy ears that make it look cute. Despite his small size, he can run very fast, and make impressive jumps.
