Sakhalin Husky

History, origin & features

As its name suggests, the Sakhalin husky, also known as karafuto ken in Japan, is native to Sakhalin Island. Its dense coat is adapted to the cold climate. This intelligent, independent dog is very energetic and needs to be trained with firmness and respect from the very first months of its life. Enduring, they love wide open spaces, and can't stand living in apartments or urban areas. Sakhalin Huskies are becoming increasingly rare, both in Japan and around the world. They are ideal for sledding, hunting and guarding. They are very energetic and love to run and play freely.
