Golden Retriever

History, origin & features

The Golden Retriever is the result of crossbreeding between several breeds, including the Wavy Coasted (the origin of many Retrievers), the Irish Setter, the St John and the Tweed Water Spaniel during the 19th century.

The very first Golden Retriever show took place in 1909, but the breed didn't appear in France until 1925.
Breeding of the breed took off after the Second World War, and led to the current popularity of this much-loved dog. The Golden Retriever is distinguished by its extremely docile and loyal character. It's a sensitive animal that learns with gentleness and patience: too negative an upbringing can lead to behavioral problems, so it's important to always use natural, positive training.

They can adapt to any type of home, and love children and other animals as long as they are well introduced. Of course, this “gentle” temperament makes them very bad guardians! Golden Retrievers are gentle-looking dogs with a balanced physique, powerful and active. Robust and agile, they are excellent sports dogs.

The coat is flat or wavy with good feathering. The undercoat is dense and waterproof.

As for the coat, any shade from gold to cream is acceptable, but if you wish to enter your Golden Retriever in a show, its color must be neither red nor mahogany
