Norman Artesian Basset

History, origin & features

The result of cross-breeding in the 19th century between the Basset Normand and the Basset d'Artois (two breeds now extinct), the Basset Artésien Normand is considered one of the world's best shooting dogs.
It was created in France by Louis Lane and Jean-Emmanuel Le Coulteux de Canteleu, before being introduced to Anglo-Saxon countries such as England and the United States. A hunter par excellence, the Basset artésien normand stands out for its courageous, lively character. They like to live in packs, and their intelligence gives them an excellent reputation.
Its gentle, friendly nature also makes it an excellent pet, provided it can be easily trained. They are very patient with children. The Basset Artesien Normand is a long, short-legged, compact and athletic little dog. Its head, a characteristic feature of the breed, is fine and elongated, with long ears.
