In Aquitaine, they were used for hunting big game, fighting, and guarding houses and livestock. There have been different types: Toulouse type, Parisian type, Bordeaux type, the origin of today's Great Dane. With their protective instincts, they are naturally very good watchdogs. But his gentle, affectionate nature takes over when it comes to finding his masters and the children he adores. He has a very well-balanced character, even if it's difficult to restrain him once he's “decided” that there's a danger to himself or those around him.
They need to be socialized from an early age, to help them achieve a good balance and cohabit with the other animals in the household. Dogue de Bordeaux are large, powerful and muscular dogs. Its large head with hanging lips gives it a tender side. Its coat is short. The most popular coat is solid mahogany or fawn.
