English Cocker Spaniel

History, origin & features

The origins of the first English Cocker Spaniels are unknown.
They were introduced to France in the 19th century. Originally designated as cocking spaniel because of their woodcock hunting abilities, there is now a real physical difference between individuals intended for hunting and those intended for “showing”. English Cocker Spaniels are retrievers and game hounds.
They are naturally cheerful, gentle and affectionate, making them ideal for family life, whether in town or country. They thrive best when surrounded by their human companions. However, it retains a fairly independent character, as well as a strong personality.
Playful, they are very dynamic and athletic, and need a lot of exercise to channel their energy. These small dogs have a strong, compact, toned body and long, floppy ears.
Their coat is long, flat and silky. Some feathering appears on its legs, and its coat is extremely varied: black, brown, white spotted with black, fawn and tricolored.
