American Water Dog

History, origin & features

The American Water Spaniel is a breed of dog that originated in America. Its original name is American Water Spaniel.
The origins of the American Water Dog are unconfirmed: it is assumed to be a cross between the curly-coated Retriever and the English or Irish Water Dog. In fact, the so-called “Little Brown Dog” is thought to be the product of crossing the English Water Spaniel with the Curly-haired Retriever. Courageous, intelligent and lively, American Water Dogs are passionate about their role as hunter, especially when it comes to duck hunting. Docile and attentive, they are totally devoted to their master. They may also be suitable for a guard dog role. These medium-sized dogs have a harmonious appearance, with a well-proportioned, muscular but not heavy body. Its coat varies from wavy to curly, with a dense, tight undercoat to protect it from water. The coat color is generally a uniform shade of liver, brown or dark chocolate.
